Spencer Museum of Art 20/21 Gallery Renovation

The new museum director set out to reinvent the value and goals of the University educational museum. Sabatini Architects asked to help reinvent the modern gallery to create an exciting, flexible environment.

Dividing walls were removed in the 3000-square-foot gallery to create one large room. The drop ceiling also came out, exposing concrete structure and ductwork, and adding about three feet of display space.

Three of the four walls are home to 20th and 21st century paintings, sculptures, prints, ceramics, jewelry, items from the recently acquired ethnographic collections and more. The fourth wall is reserved for “conversations”—mini-exhibitions that address a single theme.
